How to use a reference tone

  1. Choose a note that sits comfortably in your range.
  2. Play the tone briefly, stop it, and imagine the note internally.
  3. Sing the note back without the tone, then check it with the pitch detector.
02 · INTERPRETATION

A reference should support the ear, not mask the voice

Sine waves isolate the fundamental and are easiest for exact matching. Triangle and sawtooth waves add harmonics, making the pitch easier to hear on some speakers.

Keep the volume modest and use headphones when a live microphone is active so the reference does not enter the analysis.

03 · FAQ

Tone generator FAQ

Are the note frequencies exact?+

Yes. Notes use twelve-tone equal temperament with A4 set to 440 Hz.

Which waveform is best for singers?+

Start with sine. Try triangle if a pure sine is hard to locate, and use sawtooth only at a comfortable volume.

Can this test hearing?+

No. This is a musical reference tool, not a calibrated hearing test or medical device.
