How to compare formants
- Use a quiet room and keep the microphone 15–30 cm away.
- Hold one comfortable pitch and vowel steadily.
- Change one thing—such as tongue height or lip rounding—and compare only high-confidence estimates.
Formants describe resonance, not vocal quality
Formants are broad spectral resonances shaped by the vocal tract. F1 and F2 are strongly related to vowel configuration; harmonics are the discrete multiples of the vocal-fold fundamental that sample those resonances.
High notes, noisy rooms, breathy sounds, and browser processing can lower confidence. A higher formant frequency is not automatically better, and values from different microphones should not be ranked.

Why are values unstable on high notes?+
As fundamental frequency rises, harmonics spread farther apart and provide fewer samples of the spectral envelope, so browser estimates become less stable.
Does F1 measure vocal placement?+
Not directly. It is an acoustic resonance estimate influenced by vowel and vocal-tract shape, not a score for a sensation or technique.
Can it diagnose a voice problem?+
No. This tool is for practice comparison and cannot replace clinical acoustic analysis or a qualified professional.
